Newseum Org * Free press

Freedom House rates Belgium’s news media “free” with 11 points on a scale of 0 to 100. Higher scores signal greater restrictions on a country’s news media.

Behind the Rating: The Belgian constitution guarantees freedom of speech and of the press, and the government generally respects those rights, Freedom House says. Laws protect journalists from disclosing sources, except in cases where disclosure would prevent serious crime or physical harm.

Freedom House also notes that newspaper ownership in Belgium has become increasingly concentrated in recent decades. A handful of companies now run most of the country’s newspapers.

About 80 percent of the population had Internet access in 2010.

About the Rating: Freedom House, a New York–based organization that supports the expansion of democracy and freedom, rates the level of press freedom in countries around the world every year. Freedom House assigns each country a score
